Emotional clarity to get things done
Getting coached is so interesting. Often we have things we know we “should” do, we want to do; yet we can’t figure out why we are not doing it. Be it going to the gym, eat better, learn a new language, declutter, to larger procrastination topics such as finance, career, relationship etc. No matter the resolve, sometimes we just can’t seem to do that task, or follow through and keep it consistent. I wanted to explore one of those tasks that I had not managed to execute, so I had a coaching session to understand why I have not decluttered a pile of clothing from my “maybe” pile (Marie Kondo style, does this bring your joy exercise). It has been sitting there for over a year, and I had tried to sell them even a few years before that. I got rid of the No pile as soon as it was done. But I wondered if there was some sort of emotional block (in addition to the fact that trying to sell these items was a pain in the butt process–photos, uploading, haggling back and forth over £5, sending out, you get the idea). Long story short, in addition to it being expensive items of clothing that I spent a lot of money on, it was also partially tied to my past life, where I was in a toxic relationship. Through the coaching process, I realized that part of me wanted to be compensated for the high price I paid by being in that relationship, in a symbolic way. And that if I sold the clothes and took the money and invested it myself, even if it was a small figure in terms of net sales, it would feel really good to do that. It would feel like closing a circle karmically. So now I am motivated to get it done, because emotionally I feel lighter, and I feel that I have an insight that gives me clarity on why I want to do this. Before, I was focused on how much of a pain it was to sell it, now I have emotional clarity on why I want it done. I started looking for potential help with the whole selling process, as I am happy to split the profits. It's the act of selling these items and then taking that and investing in me, whether it’s a course, a coach, or something else that helps me grow and heal, that feels so energizing. It is nice to add this new tool of emotional clarity to my box of how to get things started, done or make them stick.
A few other things I have learned along the way include one’s identity and knowing your why.
In a separate blog, I talk about knowing your identity, who you want to become, as a strong way to get things done or start and stick to habits. And I read somewhere that for some of the larger and scarier things, your WHY needs to be bigger than your FEAR. If you are clear on the why, you will keep going, despite the scary thoughts and feelings. This probably goes back to or is linked to Simon Sinek’s Start with your WHY nugget of wisdom. I hope some of these insights help you think of ways you can tackle the things you have been procrastinating, and unearth some deeper thoughts or emotions that could give you the motivation to move forward with something, big or small.
